May 29th, 2020 · undefined min read

What if happy cheeky smiling seems impossible to you??”

Smiles, our first thought mostly be a smile represents pure happiness. BUT, do you know there are 19 different types of smiles?

Among them, only six occur when we’re having a good time, rest will happen when one is in pain, embarrassed, uncomfortable, horrified or even miserable conditions. Further, these smiles have their distinct physical characteristics. Here we are talking about 10 of them. Next time let’s guess others’ smiles then.

smiles

1. Duchenne smile

In the 19th Century French neurologist Duchenne de Boulogne researched about mechanics of facial expressions, including how the muscles of the face contract to produce a smile. He attached electrodes to a person’s face and jolt their muscles into action. The procedure was so painful, initially Duchenne was only able to experiment on the freshly severed heads of revolutionaries. After discovering 60 “specimens”, one unlucky man has his face contorted into a broad, toothless grin. He looks idiotically happy, with his cheeks pushed up and crow’s feet around his eyes.

It’s become known as the ‘Duchenne‘smile which associated with genuine feelings of pleasure and pure happiness. It involves the contraction of just two muscles. First the zygomatic major, which resides in the cheek, tugs at the corners of the mouth, then the orbicularis oculi, which surrounds the eye, pulls up the cheeks, leading to the characteristic ‘twinkling eyes’.

2. Fake Smile

According to Duchenne’s theory, a fake smile can easily spot by simply looking to the eyes. There’s no wrinkling around the corner of eyes.

3. Fear Smile

Though we don’t tend to associate smiling with feeling fearful in humans, there are tantalising hints that the fear smile may have persist.

4. Miserable Smile

The ‘miserable smile’ is a slight, asymmetric smile with an expression of deep sadness pasted over the top. psychologists have found this on the faces those watching gruesome films – they were filmed by a hidden camera – and among patients suffering from depression. It’s a socially acceptable way of showing that you’re sad or in pain.

5. Dampened Smile

The dampened smile can define as an attempt to control happiness but exists because some muscles, such as the ones controlling the mouth, are easier to suppress than others. The cheeks will be raised but person pull the corners of the mouth downwards or press the lips together, like “I shouldn’t be smiling”.

6. Embarrassed Smile

The ‘embarrassed smile’ is identical. If not by the flushed cheeks, then the uncomfortable situation which usually precedes it. Another sign is moving the head downwards and slightly to the left.

7. Qualifier Smile

The ‘qualifier smile’ aims to take the edge off bad news. It begins abruptly, raising the lower lip slightly, and is occasionally accompanied by a slightly downwards and sideways tilt of the head. It’s perhaps the most irritating of all the smiles, since it often traps the recipient into smiling back.

8. Contempt Smile

The ‘contempt smile’ indicates a mixture of disgust and displeasure and is disconcertingly similar to a smile of true delight, except for the corners of the lips which appear tightened.

9. Malicious Joy (Angry Enjoyment) Smile

If individuals are alone and feel unobserved, they usually express feelings of malicious joy by so-called ‘Duchenne smiles’ and ‘Duchenne laughs’.

10. Flirtatious Smile

Psychologists have known for decades that Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, Mona Lisa captures an act of flirtation.

then you may need more help. Don’t hesitate to talk to a close one.

So we hope that next time you will be able to realize the truth behind someone’s smile. Keep smiling !!!
